Digital Interactions

The way we interact and communicate with digital devices is fast-changing. We take an existing technology and build on it, creating a whole new way for users to interact with their device.

I have been encouraged to ‘exploit’ various digital technologies to come up with an innovative form of expression and communication. I shall look at current trends in digital media as I seek an area to revolutionise.

We have recently seen Apple emerge as would-be health experts with their announcement of the body-monitoring iWatch and their new ‘Health’ app that was rolled out to users who updated their devices to iOS 8. Whilst they are keen to add your health data to the growing list of ‘Things they know about you’, I would like to look at ways digital technologies can help people with pre-existing and permanent conditions.

As some background, I used to work at a school for the blind and partially sighted, and I have seen a number of apps being put to use to help users with sight conditions. But I still think there are areas that technology could lend a hand, that have been overlooked, so this is somewhere I intend to research and innovate in.

iOS has a range of in-built functions to enable users with visual impairments, accessibility to all the features of their smart devices.

Along with the Dictation tool and Siri, iOS have thought about almost everything visually-impaired users could need to enjoy the features of their devices. However, I would like to look at some apps that will enable people with visual-impairments to use their smart device as a tool in other areas of their everyday life.

LookTel Money Reader

The LookTel Money Reader identifies bank notes in realtime, using the camera on a smart device and tells the user aloud.

Color ID

Color ID allows users to identify the colour of objects in realtime, using the camera on a smart device, with the app speaking aloud the results.
